‘Peep, Peep,’ Says Ricky the Chick

Downtown chicken3If you hear, “Peep, peep, peep,” coming from Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Wheeler’s classroom, you can believe your ears. A brooder with half-dozen chicks in it now sits in the middle of the room. Students have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken.

The eggs came to the classroom in an incubator and students were able to peek inside eggs with a special lamp and see the veins grow and feathers move.  Hatching day came just before May Break and now the chicks are several weeks old.

The largest chick is called a Broiler Chicken. This type of chicken grows faster than the rest and is bred for human consumption, said Mrs. Jones.

The students learned a song about ‘Ricky the Chick’ and his journey from the beginning.

Students gave a culminating event presentation about the chickens, which involved, of course, the chicken dance.
