DTS 5th Grade Students Get Special Send-off to Middle School

Teacher and student hugDowntown School students, families and staff have had to be flexible with tradition during the 2020-21 school year. In-person celebrations have been smaller with virtual students joining online whenever possible.

One tradition that has received a huge makeover is the 5th grade student send-off because celebrating this important milestone has remained a priority for staff at DTS — and leaving any student out was not an option.

So, on June 2, Mr. Burnett grabbed a microphone set up outside the front doors of the school as parents began driving through the circle drive they knew by heart after years of drop-offs and pick-ups. Teachers and staff stood ready with hugs and special gifts.

As they rode slowly through the circle drive for one last time, 5th grade students were surrounded by balloons, signs with encouraging and hopeful messages from students in all of the other grades, and most importantly the love and support of DTS teachers and staff. Inside and optional were cookies and a photo booth.

The 5th grade students will walk new, exciting middle school hallways lined with lockers, but they’ll never forget the memories they made and the care they felt each day at the Downtown School.
