PTA Fundraising

Here at DTS, we don’t ask students to raise money via endless catalog sales (selling magazines, pizzas, cookie dough, etc.). Instead, we ask that families give generously during our few fundraising events through the year. As you know, Iowa schools are challenged by shrinking budgets while paradoxically facing greater demands for results. Please help support our Downtown School with your donations. Your generosity is appreciated and put right back into the school. Here are some options:

Adopt-a-Teacher fund – Money collected is evenly distributed among the teachers each year and goes toward whatever the teacher needs in the classroom. This is the best way to provide support across the entire school. You can donate anytime – just drop a check or an envelope of cash in the “Adopt-a-Teacher Fund” box by the front doors (or ask Mrs. VanWaardhuizen).  Please make checks out to “Downtown School PTA” and write “Adopt-a-teacher fund” in the memo line.

Bi-annual auction – This every-other-year auction is the top fundraiser for DTS… and so much fun! In past years, we’ve raised enough money to pay for significant purchases for the school (library furniture, classroom technology, etc.). You’ll have a chance to bid on local events, trips, gift baskets, staff talents and more! Watch for more auction information via email and backpack notes.

T-shirt sales – Choose from a variety of styles and colors to show your school spirit! T-shirts are available for sale in the fall. Watch for ordering information via email and backpack notes.

Book Fairs – Teachers and students alike love the book fairs held during conferences and other times throughout the year. Each book fair is a great chance to support the school, add to the classroom library and bring some books home for your family. Watch for more information via email and backpack notes.

Original Art Works – Every year, we offer the opportunity to see your child’s artwork on mugs, t-shirts, calendars, phone cases and more. These customized items are great gift ideas and arrive just in time for holiday gift-giving. Watch for ordering information via email and backpack notes.

Other ways to donate to the school:

  • Box Tops for Education – Collect labels and drop them off in the collection box by the front entrance. And watch for more info about the annual “Hawkeyes vs Cyclones” Box Tops competition.
  • Your skills/network – Your time and talents could be put to great use! Let us know if you or someone you know is willing to provide:
    • Food/catering
    • Photography/videography
    • Entertainment/arts – music, artwork, acting, dancing, emceeing, etc.
    • Communications – screen printing, poster/flyer design, web design, etc.
