After a long wait, our 2017-18 calendar is now official and available for download. The Iowa Department of Education has approved our application to be a year-round school next year, and the DMPS school board approved the calendar. …
Our 7/8 friends hosted a charity drive for Joppa, a local nonprofit that advocates on behalf of the homeless. They dressed in pajamas to raise consciousness about the need to provide assistance to area homeless people. Then they asked their fellow Downtown School friends to bring supplies for the homeless. Our students brought more than 1,000 items over two days!
Downtown School students collected more than 1,500 items for the DMARC food pantries before Winter break. For exceeding their goal, and to celebrate the end of the calendar year, they were treated to a dance party in the gym! Click on the headline to see more fun photos.
Downtown School 5s and 6s celebrated the arrival of winter with a fun choral concert for their families. Students sang about gingerbread men, melting snowmen and jingle bells! Thanks to our 5 and 6 teachers and staff for a wonderful time! Click on the headline to see photos of the concert.
Winter break is approaching quickly. Don’t forget to bring in items for the food bank this week. Also, our last All School Sing of the year is on Friday, Dec. 16 at 8:30 a.m. in the Central Campus auditorium. Our last day of school before break is Dec. 16, and we’ll see you back here on Tuesday, Jan. 3! We wish you the happiest of holidays!

Students in Stephanie Hubka and Abby Boruff’s class at Downtown School made cards to thank SRO Vinnie Quang for his service. After Quang spoke to the students briefly, the students handed him their cards and joined in for a group hug. Hundreds of parents and students enjoyed an evening at Union Park in Des Moines at the annual Downtown School picnic. Carousel rides were free, courtesy of the DTS PTA. Thank you to our PTA volunteers and everyone’s participation in PTA fundraisers — you help make events like this possible!
