Downtown School Plant Day Sing Along Kick Off

On Wednesday, May 29th, Downtown School students, families and staff gathered to celebrate Plant Day with our first ever outdoor Sing Along.  We filled a bare, drab concrete parking area with life, enthusiasm and song.  The Downtown School welcomed representatives from The American Heart Association and UnityPoint as well.  The American Heart Association wants children to learn about making healthy food choices by having the opportunity to grow their own vegetables. Our garden supplies were funded by a grant from the American Heart Association’s Teaching Gardens program.  The Executive Director of the American Heart Association for Central Iowa BJ Soupel and Project Manager for UnityPoint Health Des Moines Chris McCarthy shared opening remarks and presented Mr. Johnson and Ms. Capper a beautiful plaque and a  bright flower pot.

The garden was a busy place all morning as groups of students explored seedlings in some of the beds, observed a variety of seeds, planted some seeds and participated in a school wide art project.  The rainy weather held off and it was a beautiful day for everyone.
