When the Scavo High School students arrived for their first day of school at Central Campus, Downtown School students were ready. Mrs. Arbogast and Mrs. Donovan’s students made signs to welcome their new friends to the newly renovated 4th floor of Central Campus. Welcome, Scavo students!

The Downtown School 5 and 6-year-olds sang about “Mitten Weather”, the “Gingerbread Man”, “Jingle Bells” and the love that goes along with the holidays in the Central Campus Auditorium this week. Everyone agrees they did an excellent job.
Ms. Clark’s and Mrs. Sweeney’s classroom focused on the U.S. Constitution for two intense weeks of study involving many members of the community, role play and presentation preparation. What resulted was a multi-media culminating event and a room full of students who appreciate our country today. Click the image to read more.
It’s that time of year again when we spend more time indoors and germs have a chance to spread in close quarters like classrooms and cafeterias. In November, Downtown School students participated in a mock election. The older kids put a lot of work into preparing for the day. Click on the photo to learn about the experience from three budding student-journalists, and see who won the election!
For the third year in a row, two of Iowa’s finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are from DMPS. Molly Sweeney and Jessica Watson – both teachers here at the Downtown School – are among seven Iowa teachers nominated for the nation’s top science and math educator award. Downtown School students made ballots, registered voters and created a video showing younger students how to vote on Election Day. Mrs. Arbogast was instrumental in helping students learn about the process. Be sure to ask your child how they voted for Governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative. Des Moines Parks and Recreation and Des Moines Public Schools are partnering to offer a youth basketball league for the 2014-2015 season. The program is for students in grades 1st through 7th. The registration deadline is October 17 and fees are $50 per student or $450 per team. Click the image to learn more and register to play.
