Ms. Watson and Ms. Matthews’ second and third grade students owned the Central Campus auditorium with their performance of, “The Granny Awards.” Granny, who was retired from show business, honored all of our favorite fairy tale characters.
Initial results of Trinect — a five-year collaboration between Iowa State University and the Des Moines Public Schools funded by a $4.5 million National Science Foundation grant — show that elementary school teachers and their students are developing a better understanding of engineering, while engineers are learning how to better communicate their craft. After a long wait, our 2017-18 calendar is now official and available for download. The Iowa Department of Education has approved our application to be a year-round school next year, and the DMPS school board approved the calendar. …
Our 7/8 friends hosted a charity drive for Joppa, a local nonprofit that advocates on behalf of the homeless. They dressed in pajamas to raise consciousness about the need to provide assistance to area homeless people. Then they asked their fellow Downtown School friends to bring supplies for the homeless. Our students brought more than 1,000 items over two days!
